A permanent-residence photo project can produce several similar files as you resize and export. Keep the request that prompted the photo beside those files. This lets you verify the right result against the right instructions instead of treating every immigration upload as the same task.

Who this guide is for

Use this guide to manage file quality and framing when an immigration process requests a portrait. It is particularly useful when transferring a photographer’s file between a phone and the computer used for the application.

Key Biometric Specifications

Physical DimensionsDigital: at least 420×540 pixels; print: 50×70 mm
Head Height RatioFace length between 31 mm and 36 mm (chin to crown)
Backdrop StandardPlain white or light-coloured background

Preparing the photo

Practical preparation tips; use the linked application instructions for requirements.

  1. Save the full text of the photo request or its source link. Label the work folder with that request, not just Canada. If a later message asks for another deliverable, start a new checklist instead of overwriting the first.
  2. Transfer the source image without a messaging-app resize. After transfer, compare its width and height with the original properties. If those values changed unexpectedly, obtain the original file again before doing more work.
  3. Check that resizing preserves the aspect ratio. Change one dimension with proportions locked, then compare the result with the required dimensions. If both cannot match without distortion, you need a different crop rather than independent stretching.
  4. Examine the neck and jaw for shadows and the eyes for focus. A small bright preview can conceal dark patches, so review the file on a larger display. Retake a blurred capture; increasing the pixel count will not restore detail.
  5. Keep a record of export settings and label attempts in order. When one upload fails, record the exact message before changing anything. That gives you a useful comparison instead of a folder full of unexplained versions.

Mandatory Consular Rules

  • For digital Express Entry uploads: minimum 420×540 pixels, file size between 240 KB and 4 MB.
  • Frontal view with head centered and neutral facial expression.
  • No shadows on face, ears, background, or shoulders.
  • PR card portal requires front and back image uploads if paper photography back stamp is supplied.
  • Tinted glasses and sunglasses are prohibited; clear frames must show eyes completely.

Troubleshooting the photo

The face becomes narrow after resizing

Width and height were changed independently, stretching the portrait into a different proportion.

Return to the unmodified original, lock proportions, and make a crop suited to the requested shape. Check facial appearance before exporting again.

Top Rejection Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Low resolution under 420×540 pixels.
  • Uneven lighting causing shadows along the neck or jawline.
  • Smiling, tilted head, or hair obscuring eyebrow lines.
  • Incorrect aspect ratio distorting facial proportions.

Canada photo requirements and document options

Digital and printed copies

A physical print size and a pixel-size requirement measure different things. Use the instructions for the requested deliverable rather than converting one number and assuming every other requirement follows from it.

Questions about this guide

Why is the transferred file smaller than the photographer’s original?

The transfer method may have compressed or resized it. Compare file properties and request a direct file transfer if detail was lost.

What should I record when the PR upload fails?

Keep the exact error, filename, pixel dimensions and byte size. Change the setting relevant to the message so you can tell whether the next attempt addressed the problem.
