Before preparing a visa photo, open the photo instructions from the application you are completing. Keep that page beside your image editor. A file can look right in a square preview and still be the wrong file for the upload field; appearance, dimensions and submission route need separate checks.

Preparing the photo

- Write down the application name beside the photo filename. Save the original capture separately from the upload copy, and put screenshots of any upload errors in the same folder. This makes it possible to trace which file caused the problem.
- Position the camera level with your eyes and ask another person to take the picture. Leave space around your head before cropping. Review the pupils and hairline at full size; a small preview hides motion blur and bright reflections.
- Check the width, height, file format and file size in the saved file properties. Compare them with the instructions open in your browser. Changing the filename extension does not convert the image; use an export command when conversion is needed.
- After selecting the image, inspect the application preview. If the top of the head disappears or the face becomes wider, stop and check the crop. Keep the error message verbatim instead of repeatedly compressing an image that may have a framing problem.
Mandatory Consular Rules
- Use a recent colour photo with a plain white or off-white background and a neutral expression.
- For DS-160 applications, follow the digital-image instructions linked by the Department of State and your embassy or consulate.
- DV entry images have a separate requirement: square JPEG, 600×600 pixels, no more than 240 kB.
- A successful photo upload does not guarantee acceptance of the photograph.

A face that looks soft despite a large file
An image may contain many pixels but still be out of focus. Enlarging a blurred capture makes the blur bigger.
Retake with the camera supported, clean the lens, and focus on the face before pressing the shutter.

- Shadows, poor focus, or an obstructed face.
