How to Photograph Your Baby at Home Like a Pro

01

Lay Baby on a White Sheet or Blanket

Place a flat white bedsheet, crib sheet, or plain towel on the bed or floor. Lay your baby flat on their back. If your baby cannot hold their head upright, this avoids anyone needing to support them awkwardly.

02

Stand Above & Use Window Daylight

Position the bed near a large window for soft, natural daylight. Stand directly over the baby (4–5 feet away). Ensure your own body does not cast a shadow over the baby's face. Never use camera flash directly in a baby's eyes.

03

Grab Their Attention (No Pacifiers)

Remove pacifiers, bibs, hats, and large hair bows. Hold a toy or rattle right next to your phone camera lens so your baby looks straight up towards the camera. Both ears should be equally visible.

04

Upload & Let ApprovaVisa Handle the Rest

Upload the snapshot here and center your baby in the free crop. For a US passport, retake a photo with a poor background rather than digitally altering it.

US Passport Photo Tips for Babies and Toddlers

The US Department of State recommends a plain white or off-white sheet, no shadows or other person in the photo, a forward-facing child and a fully visible face. An infant's eyes may be partly closed. Read the official US passport photo guidance (checked September 22, 2026).

Officially Allowed for Infants
  • ✓ Eyes Partly Open: The US Department of State accepts an infant whose eyes are not entirely open.
  • ✓ Plain Sheet: Place the baby on a plain white or off-white sheet, or cover a car seat with one.
  • ✓ Face Visible: Aim for a forward-facing, unobstructed full face.
Common Rejection Triggers
  • ✕ Visible Parent Hands: No other person should appear in the submitted photo.
  • ✕ Pacifiers & Teethers: Must be removed prior to taking the photo.
  • ✕ Headbands & Ribbons: Large bows or headbands that obscure the forehead or ears will cause rejection.
  • ✕ Toys or Bottles: No secondary objects may be in the frame.

Baby Passport Photo FAQ

Why do pharmacies like Walgreens and CVS struggle with baby passport photos?

Pharmacies use fixed stools and handheld point-and-shoot cameras designed for adults who can sit still. Store clerks are usually not trained to photograph babies, store lighting creates harsh shadows, and babies often get terrified by store noise. ApprovaVisa lets you take the photo peacefully at home when your baby is relaxed.

What if my baby won't keep their eyes open?

For a US passport, the Department of State says it is acceptable if an infant's eyes are not entirely open. Other children must have their eyes open. Check the linked official guidance for examples.

Can I support my newborn's head with my hand?

You can support your baby while taking the picture, but no other person should appear in the submitted US passport photo. Keep your hand out of frame where possible, and inspect any processed result before using it.
